About Police Now

About Working With Police Now

Police Now exists to transform communities, reduce crime and increase the public’s confidence in policing by recruiting and developing an outstanding and diverse group of individuals to be leaders on the policing frontline and in wider society. In a similar way to Teach First (primary and secondary schools), Think Ahead (adult social care) and Frontline (children’s social work) Police Now is a social enterprise that promotes public service in some of the UK’s most challenged areas among high achieving graduates.

The programme offers intellectual challenge, a fast-paced learning environment and responsibility for transformational change from the word go. The emphasis is on rallying the country’s brightest and most innovative graduates, harnessing their overwhelming desire to make a positive difference in the communities that need us most, and giving them the tools and training they need to have a genuine positive disproportionate impact.

The programme is not a fast-track promotion scheme and officers are not guaranteed promotion at the end of their two years. However, the two years on the programme are equivalent to a new recruit’s probationary period, meaning they can choose to continue their career as a police officer upon finishing the programme.

Whilst we are looking to recruit graduates, we understand that academic potential is not everything, which is why we assess each candidate’s commitment to public service at each stage of their application.

The aim of the Police Now programme is to not only create extraordinary police officers, but also to create exceptional leaders in our communities who can act as ambassadors for the police for years to come.

Those who choose to leave policing and enter other professions will take their direct experience of frontline policing with them. By sharing their personal knowledge far and wide, they’ll create a better understanding of the extraordinary challenges and situations that the police face, every single day.

These Police Now Ambassadors will become advocates for policing in other walks of life, from journalism to finance, banking or politics. Ultimately, they’ll help us to achieve Police Now’s vitally important mission: to transform communities through a reduction in crime and increase in public confidence.

Police Now officers are fully warranted, uniformed police officers who operate on the frontline, in areas of high deprivation that could be home to as many as 20,000 people.

Over the two years of the programme, their role is to demonstrate not only a significant reduction in crime in their community, but also increase trust in the police and evidence that residents are on track to experience broader opportunities and a higher quality of life in the future.

This role was specifically chosen to give the officers the opportunity to showcase their problem-solving skills, leadership potential and fundamentally make a tangible difference in the most challenged communities in the country. Because we believe that great police officers, given the highest levels of support and freedom, can contribute to changing lives.

Police Now was started inside the Metropolitan Police Service in 2015. In 2016, we became independent and expanded to work with seven partner police forces. Officers from our 2017 cohort have been posted to one of 19 partner police forces.

Residents now feel they have a Dedicated Ward Officer who really cares about the crime problems on the ward and is committed to making the ward a safer place and have a real impact on their quality of life….The fact that Police Now brought him to us shows that this is a scheme that delivers a quality product and service.”
