The success of our Next Impact careers event

Managing your career

Police Now has recently run its first ever careers fair called Next Impact for participants coming to the end of the two-year programme. Marion Walker, corporate partnerships manager and one of the organisers of Next Impact, shares her highlights of the event.

Managing your career

“ensuring everything ran smoothly for Police Now’s Next Impact event.”

When I joined Police Now I didn’t imagine three months later I would be running around clutching a clipboard with my headphone plugged into my ear being compared to Monica Gellar from Friends!  But that was me a couple of weeks ago, ensuring everything ran smoothly for Police Now’s Next Impact event.

“just don’t ask about the savoury marshmallows!”

The event was organised for the 2015 Police Now cohort who are due to complete the programme in the summer later this year. As part of the two-year programme we want to do everything possible to help our participants prepare for their next steps whether that involves staying within policing or moving into the private, public or third sector. With a small project team, we set about organising what we hoped would be a fantastic event.  Little did we know what we were letting ourselves in for as we became immersed in the world of event management from managing guest lists to selecting canapés – just don’t ask about the savoury marshmallows!

“Dame Julia demonstrated the passion of Police Now”

So, what were some of the highlights of the event? For me personally, it was seeing the event which up until the day had been a combination of Gantt charts, emails and a lot of meetings, finally come together, in the way we envisioned. This included a workshop with Police Pass for officers looking to sit the National Investigators’ Exam in a few months, a career coaching session delivered by my own mentor Anna Lundberg, and a Q&A session with the ever-inspiring Dame Julia Cleverdon. Dame Julia demonstrated the passion of Police Now as she shared her tips on leadership commenting that “leadership is like a teabag, you don’t know how strong it is until it’s in hot water.”

“the main highlight was seeing the participants networking with our corporate partners.”

Most importantly, however, the main highlight was seeing the participants networking with our corporate partners. We had representatives from Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, PA Consulting and WPP attending the event alongside police specialist units such as counter terrorism, homicide, covert operations and trident. Seeing them all chatting in a buzzing atmosphere about the enormous range of opportunities available to the Police Now participants was the real measure of success.

“I’m looking forward to seeing where our participants head off to this summer”

As the first Careers Fair we’ve organised, it was important it went well and set the tone for future events. I’m looking forward to seeing where our participants head off to this summer and what they achieve in their careers.
