The Counter Terrorism Policing network is a collaboration of UK police forces stretching across the UK. There are eleven regional counter terrorism units (CTUs) and intelligence units (CTIUs).
These units collaborate daily to confront the threat from terrorism. They have officers and staff working in a range of specialist fields such as investigations, forensics, digital exploitation, financial inquiries, community liaison and communications.

Working in Counter Terrorism requires security vetting, your final offer to join the programme is subject to you passing these checks.
You’ll undergo Advanced (Developed Vetting) and Counter Terrorism checks, covering a range of areas including, but not limited to:

Begin onboarding and complete your pre-employment checks, including Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism checks which you must pass before starting the programme.
Attend our induction event, connect with fellow offer holders, and join virtual sessions to prepare for the rigours of training.
A thirteen-week intensive training programme covering law, investigative techniques, evidence gathering, and interview skills. Here, you’ll undergo Managed Vetting (MV) and Developed Vetting (DV) which you must pass before joining the Counter Terrorism team.
Join your force initially as a trainee detective, shadowing experienced officers, managing investigations, and applying your academy knowledge to real cases.
Sit the NIE assessment, a key milestone in your progression toward becoming a fully qualified detective constable within a Counter Terorrism unit.
Investigate serious and complex crimes, work with victims and witnesses, and build the critical thinking skills needed to solve high-profile cases, which will prepare you for future work in Counter Terrorism.
Gain expertise in areas like cybercrime and safeguarding, building expertise in different investigative fields before focusing on your Counter Terrorism career.
Complete the programme, earn your qualification, and progress into the counter terrorism team immediately or soon after programme completion.

As a Police Detective in Counter Terrorism, your primary objective is to keep people safe from terrorism, by preventing vulnerable people being drawn into extremism, investigating and bringing terrorists to justice and protecting the public from terrorist threats.
The intelligence you gather and the decisions you make will be crucial to the security of our society and protecting innocent lives. You’ll have the opportunity to work closely with a range of different government and international agencies, from Mi5 to special forces.

Each case will be unique and high stakes. As a detective there is no room for assumptions. Being diligent and collecting evidence based on facts are all part of each line of enquiry you’ll follow.
You’ll be dealing with issues such as radicalisation, extremist groups and the prevention of terrorist attacks. Diligence and attention to detail will be critical to collecting evidence and uncovering the truth.
Vetting – those who work in Counter Terrorism Policing will undergo advanced vetting.
Eligibility – to work in Counter Terrorism you’ll need to have resided in the UK continuously for the past 10 years and be a British citizen. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, your application will still be considered.
Programme details – you’ll begin Counter Terrorism work in year two of our National Detective Programme.
