Police Now officer engages with over 175 groups of young people in early intervention scheme

Police Now neighbourhood specialist Vittoria Radaelli has been driving success with the ‘Teachable Moments Engagement Car’ (TMEC), which has engaged with over 175 groups of young people across Bath and North East Somerset.
The TMEC aims to steer young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) by going on proactive patrols and providing support following incidents involving young people.
This is based on teachable moment theory, which suggests people are more open to making changes in their lives after experiencing a significant event.
Following the project’s early success, the initiative has now secured new funding from Avon and Somerset’s Police and Crime Commissioner to continue its impactful work.
Police Constable Vittoria Radaelli led the project’s successful trial in the area, after training to be a neighbourhood policing specialist on Police Now’s national programme. Police Now’s training focuses on creative problem-solving and leadership, to equip their recruits with the skills and knowledge to reduce crime and ASB and improve public confidence in policing.
She has been patrolling in the TMEC alongside a youth worker from Youth Connect Southwest, who provided the car for the project.
One of the most impactful moments came after a stabbing in Bath city centre last year – a traumatic incident for the community, that left a man with life-changing injuries and saw a teenager arrested and convicted. Vittoria and her team offered vital support to affected and traumatised young people and partnered with charity Street Doctors to deliver a first aid workshop, helping equip participants with life-saving skills and the confidence to act in an emergency.
Vittoria, who is based in Avon and Somerset Police’s early intervention team, said: “The results from that shift were invaluable, emphasising better than ever before how trauma can affect young people locally and why early intervention is so critical. The workshop with Street Doctors saw brilliant engagement; it’s partnership work like this that is so important to build safer communities. It’s my passion and the reason I joined policing – and why I chose to join through Police Now’s neighbourhood specialism specifically, which focuses on this long-term community impact and rewarding partnership work.”
The TMEC was first piloted in West Yorkshire in 2021 before being trialled in two areas across Avon and Somerset, including Bath and North East Somerset, and North Somerset – between July 2024 and March 2025. It will now be redeployed across both areas throughout 2025-26.
While on Police Now’s programme, Vittoria also received a certificate of excellence for the work she did to support a victim of domestic violence in a complex case and bring the offender to justice. She also helped arrest one of Frome’s most prolific drug dealers, thanks to the investigative work she conducted whilst on neighbourhood patrol.
