Police Now officer wins national award for championing neurodiversity in The Met
PC Emily Kemp-Morris won the 'Outstanding Achievement Award'

Police Constable Emily Kemp-Morris has won a national Police Now award for supporting neurodivergent colleagues in the Metropolitan Police Service.

Emily has continuously championed neurodiversity within force networks and spoken at internal events, to share her knowledge and passionately advocate for inclusivity.

This has included driving improvements in borough-wide training to ensure that new officers receive an input on neurodiversity at the start of their careers – covering common neurodivergent conditions, tips for supporting neurodivergent colleagues and members of the public, and the support available in force.

Emily, a neighbourhood police officer in the Central North Borough Command Unit, said: “When I landed in the force after Police Now’s training academy, I learned about all the different networks that are available to officers and staff.

“I joined several, including the ADHD Alliance, and became Chair of the Dyspraxia Network. The ADHD Alliance is a national network; there’s a growing conversation about neurodiversity across policing as a whole.

“However, I realised that many new neurodivergent officers joining the force were unaware of the support available to them. I contacted our Learning and Development department to discuss ways we could raise awareness of the networks and the support available to new officers when they begin their street duties, and it progressed from there.

“I am passionate about removing any stigma and shame around disabilities and neurodivergent conditions. As well as ensuring new recruits feel supported, our inputs on neurodiversity aim to increase understanding among serving officers – to break down barriers and ensure that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to best support each other, and the public we serve.”

Emily joined the Met via Police Now’s National Graduate Programme – which recruits, trains and supports outstanding graduates to become leaders on the policing frontline.

She was presented with the ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ at the national Police Now graduation ceremony this month for her work across the programme, as she officially completed the two-year programme.

She is now undertaking a four-week secondment in the Home Office’s Workforce and Professionalism Unit  as a result of the opportunities Police Now’s programme provides – where she will be helping to inform national policing policy and further support officer wellbeing.

Emily said: “Police Now really values diversity, which is incredibly important in policing; we can’t serve the public if we don’t represent the public. The programme encourages officers to be problem-solvers, to identify areas for improvement and drive the proactive change that is needed.

“My advice to all officers is to embrace who you are. Don’t ever come to work feeling you can’t be yourself, because there are people to help you and networks in the Met to suit and support everybody.”

Emily has also qualified as a mental health first aider and recently completed Welfare Support Officer training, to even better understand how to support colleagues in the force.
