Surrey Police careers

Surrey is the most densely populated county in South East England, having increased in population by 8.8% since 2001 to 1.2 million. 9.6% of the reported population is from black and ethnic minority communities, varying from 16.4% in Woking borough to 4% in Waverley.

Surrey is known as an affluent county, but there are tight pockets of deprivation, enclosed within housing estates or even within a few streets.

Recorded levels of sexual offences and domestic abuse are rising and the Complex Abuse Unit have live Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) investigations underway. Surrey has a number of children’s homes and CSE is a risk.

We have recruited 54 police officers for Surrey Police to date.

I think one of the most exciting things about being a neighbourhood officer and going through the Police Now scheme is that because you've come in externally you do get more opportunities.

In my short time in Surrey Police I've already done attachments with dog handlers, with traffic, with our proactive team, and I'm in talks to get more with our detectives as well. The best thing about it is that everyone is just so open and you really do join a family. There is a massive push and acceptance to try new things, which is really great because I think I expected that to come at a much later date, but that hasn't been the case at all.

As both a woman with a mixed heritage and an officer for Surrey Police, the force has been nothing but inclusive from the moment I arrived, despite my initial reservations. As the current Vice Chair of SPACE (Surrey Police Association of Culture and Ethnicity) I have observed a real aspiration force-wide to make Surrey a happy, supportive and inclusive environment for absolutely everybody that joins the policing family, and in whatever capacity.

Furthermore, schemes such as PALS (Professional Action Learning Sets) does wonders to nurture staff and officers within Surrey and Sussex from ethnic or mixed backgrounds, of whom want to reach their full potential and continue to break down barriers.
